Thank you Ryan for writing this up, it is absolutely fantastic!
The game began with a group of 15 players. Many of them were new players to the game and assumed that they would be the only ones playing. With the amount of spies withheld from general knowledge, many citizens began to assume that there were 3 spies among them.
A player known as Imagine was Imprisoned first, though it was not done by the spies choice. This would spawn many jokes about "imagination", one memorably being "Imagine That."
An initial conflict began when citizens became torn between choosing to eliminate less active players or more suspicious players. Players like Anneliese and Jakub chose to target seemingly less active Carrie, while Leena, Miles, Jessica, Reicheru, and Judith would vote for their biggest suspect, Jakub.
The first vote came down to a tie where Carrie and Jennipher both switched votes to Jakub, who in turn was exiled. Anneliese and Tyler did not vote in the revote. Jakub was revealed as a citizen.
The exile would become a great target of speculation, as many players began to accuse the Jakub voters of having at least one spy in their midst. Though the spy was Jessica, she would continue to be the least suspected among them for quite a while.
Week 2
Citizens began to fear for their safety in the game, while the spies pretended to be just as afraid.
Players then competed in a challenge to win safety from an Exile & Imprisonment, or just an Imprisonment. Some struggled while some players, like Judith and Leena, excelled.
In an effort to eliminate someone that could be a threat and could trace back to the spies, Leena was Imprisoned.
Anneliese made an effort to spread knowledge of her role in the event that she was Imprisoned. She revealed the factual details to two players initially - Reicheru and Tenchi, based on pre-alignment interactions. Tenchi, a spy, would use this role information to continue to manipulate Anneliese and those she told of the role throughout the game. Later in this week, Anneliese also informed Jack of her role, though she trusted him the least out of the entire group.
Large suspicions continued to flow about Jennipher and Carrie, and the loving Judith, who claims she knows there are three spies, becomes a large suspect among her fellow citizens. In the 2nd exile, Tyler was eliminated by self-votes, despite the effort Jessica and Anneliese made to make him become more active.
Week 3
Immediately after the exile, the season's twist is revealed to the cast - they have found more survivors of the government's attack. 11 more players join the game. Many people in the "original" group become angry and worried, as their spy theories are quickly thrown out the window. The results of the challenge are revealed as one by one the members of the other group are brought in according to their time. Many players become confused, and others become outraged.
While the "original" group played on, the other survivors participated in challenges to find one another. Among them, Audrey and Sujata had strong performances.
When Judith's excellent time in the challenge is beaten by newcomer Bebe, she becomes outraged. Judith is safe from the next Imprisonment, while Bebe is safe from both Week 3 Imprisonment & Exile.
Judith accuses Bebe of being a spy with deadly accuracy, though Bebe and many other players pass it off as Judith being jealous of Bebe's performance and accusing her of cheating. Suspicions of Judith continue to grow among the collective.
Anneliese continues to fear that she may have told the wrong person about her role, and hopes she can trust those she told her secret word to. When Audrey from the new group is Imprisoned as a threat, Anneliese becomes convinced that there are no spies among her trust group of Reicheru, Tenchi, and Jack. Anneliese tells Jennipher a fake secret word, though she informs her of her ability. Anneliese tells Jessica of her ability and gives her the real word, also informing her that she told Jennipher a fake word because she distrusts her.
Jack and Tenchi's bond continues to grow, as they convince each other that pretending to be suspicious of one another will save them from both exiles and imprisonments. Reicheru and Tenchi begin to explore their romantic relationship.
Many people from the new group feel isolated and make an effort to reach out to the original group. Among them are Claire and Bruce. Some people become suspicious of this action but dismiss it for the ongoing tension between Judith and Bebe.
Hatred among Anneliese and Arthur continues to grow as their personalities clash over what is best for the burg. Both blame the other for the lack of success with catching spies thus far, even though both have voted similarly.
Reicheru, who has become quite close with Judith, is convinced that she is a spy. She employs Jack, Tenchi, and Anneliese to help her eliminated Judith at the next exile by accusing her identity. Because the group seems to trust each other, they plan to follow her lead.
At exile, Claire is revealed to have cheated at the challenge, a topic which brings her under strong scrutiny from her other contestants.
Newcomers Jordan and Sujata both recieve self votes, and new players have yet to speak to Sujata.
The vote comes close between Carrie and Judith, with every spy except for Claire voting for Judith. Ultimately the accusation votes from Tenchi, Jack, and Anneliese (Who are all new players to Spies) would make Judith the 3rd citizen exiled from the game.
Suspicions immediately turn to Reicheru, who convinced her friends that she was "100% Judith was a spy". Judith leaves behind a touching letter to the burg.
Trina and Bebe exhibit a very close bond. Trina entrusts Bebe with all of her thoughts and secret information, including her role, Do or Die.
Anneliese becomes frantic once again, attempting to avoid Imprisonment. She receives a note from Sam notifying her that her bunker progress is abysmally low (5 points between five people, though there should be somewhere around 8 or 9), meaning a spy has not posted the secret word in their confessional in an attempt to not blow up the bunker and notify Anneliese of a traitor. Knowing that there must be at least one spy among the group of four she has told her word to (Tenchi, Jessica, Reicheru, Jennipher and Jack), Anneliese takes her entire role and all of the information she has learned public. Knowing this greatly endangers the citizens within the group, Reicheru reacts strongly.
"This is a fucking FIASCO. Anneliese, I blame you ENTIRELY. You've probably gone and killed us all, with yourself as first on the hit list. If you have ANY decency left, if you have finally shed the delusion that somehow sacrificing half the fucking citizens in the burg in the HOPE of perhaps getting ONE FUCKING SPY is somehow NOBLE AND GOOD, you had better SHUT THE HELL UP and don't attempt to even suggest that any of us is SAFE!!!!!!!!"
Anneliese taking her role public would lead to the most memorable moment of the game, and is now only referred to as the "Bunker Drama".
Many people remain skeptical about Anneliese's role, as she has spread entirely different stories about her role to several suspects in order to keep herself safe. Some people like Brooks and Claire assume that if Anneliese is Imprisoned, a spy will leave in her place. However, since there are Spies among Anneliese's trust group, they know this is not the true power of the role.
At Imprisonment, Anneliese is suggested to leave. Shane, however, activates his Decision Maker ability, successfully preventing her from being Imprisoned. Though Jack and Shane seemed to trust one another prior to this event, Jack is responsible for taking Shane's claim public.
There is confusion over whether or not it was a gift or a role, and many people immediately claim suspicions of Shane lying about receiving a gift. Trina, who knows that Taylor is the gift giver, is aware of every gift given, and heads this front.
In order to take away from the stress of the week, a Costume Party is hosted by Sam, which includes suspicion threads and opinions on players. Among the suspicion threads, Anneliese, Taylor, and Trina rank extremely low.
Anneliese's trust for Trina begins to expand when Trina trusts her with her role, Do or Die. Anneliese, in an attempt to yet again throw off the spies, publicly states that she lied about her entire role, even though the information pinpointed 2 sets of 1 person being a spy. When Tenchi successfully dissuades her from analyzing the situation mathematically, Anneliese gives up on using the bunker for any viable information.
Come exile, Anneliese's suspicions of Jennipher have risen to an all-time high, as she believes she is playing dumb. Anneliese convinces Reicheru that she owes her one for exiling Judith, and insists that Jennipher or Jessica is a spy, though she full-heartedly trusts Jessica.
Jennipher is lynched, and revealed as a citizen. In a surprise announcement, the citizens have another chance through a double-exile, and Carrie, a long-time suspect, is eliminated. She is revealed as a citizen.
This is memorably one of the most destructive and least fruitful episodes in Spies history. All evidencial information was thrown away and every spy effectively knew of every role by this point, fully allowing them to manipulate the game.
Shane decides that in the event he is eliminated, he will pass his Decision Maker role to Raphael, a spy.
Shane is Imprisoned early into the week, as suspicions of Anneliese have begun to increase after her faulty exiles.
Anneliese and her group begin to become insistent that they must find at least two spies within the original group, and one of them must be an original Jakub voter. Their choices are down to Jessica or Miles, as mathematically Anneliese knows that Reicheru and Jack MUST be citizens. Anneliese guns for Miles after he reveals to her privately that he has a role, "The Inheritor", which obtains citizen roles after they have been eliminated.
Anneliese's bunker detonates after she tells more people, including Arthur and Bruce, meaning a spy has posted the word in their confessional.
Shane is Imprisoned live, and Matthew goes public with his opinions that Anneliese is both a bitch and a spy. Matthew, regarded as one of the more annoying players, successfully helps the Spies to lead 3 citizen bandwagons for the next exile.
On the night of exile, many strong emotions are shared. Trina and Anneliese attempt to persuade the other to vote how they want, while Anneliese knows that Trina's target, Jack, is a citizen. Trina informs Anneliese that Taylor is the gift giver, and that they must work together. She states "Don't worry, I will make absolute sure that you are not leavinig tonight." Anneliese is confused, because Trina had retracted her role claim publicly in the previous week.
Anneliese and Jack share a sincere moment when they realize that one of the two of them will be leaving. Though their bond was random and unintended, they created one of the strongest friendships in the game that Spies has seen.
Trina and Bebe, another unseparable duo, share all final thoughts with one another, and Trina confides any last minute information with Bebe. Bebe, as a spy, continues to relay this information to all her spy companions.
At the live exile, no votes are revealed. Instead, Trina has activated her Do or Die ability in an effort to save Anneliese. She chooses to void the exile votes and instead pick one target. If the target is a spy, they are exiled and she will stay. If they are a citizen, Trina is exiled and the target will stay. Regardless of her huge suspicions of several strong suspects, including Jessica being at the top of her list, Trina chooses to use her power on Jordan, who is barely active.
This is regarded by many as one of the most confusing, hilarious, and disappointing moments in Spies history.
Immediately after Trina's departure, Anneliese decides to set up a group of citizens she has confirmed. For the first time in the entire game, a large group of people who are ALL citizens are brought together:
Taylor, The Gift Giver
Jordan, a Confirmed target from Trina's Do or Die
Anneliese, The Builder, confirmed by the gift Taylor used on Trina to identify them as the same alignment.
Jack, Confirmed by Anneliese's Role
Reicheru, also confirmed by Anneliese's role
With a group of 5 citizens, they strongly believe they can defeat the 5 spies. Anneliese, Jack, and Reicheru develop a plan to place equal suspicion on each of them from each of them, in order to prevent their Imprisonment.
Anneliese also asks each member to PM her their individual suspicions. When the final tally is made up, Jordan has not responded, and two spies rank in the Top 3 of the list. Miles, who is listed as #1, is decided upon as the next target by the group.
Anneliese's public role claims / lies / withdrawn role claims finally catch up to her, and she is Imprisoned by the Spies. She shares heartfelt goodbyes with everyone, and asks her group to continue on without her.
Immediately after Anneliese's Imprisonment, a challenge is held, and the winner will be given a private investigation. Despite Jack publicly saying that he will target Bebe this week, her group gives her the investigation. She uses it on Jessica, saying that she is now a confirmed citizen. Few remaining players question this move enough to eliminate either one of them.
Miles, though furious with Anneliese revealing his role, has Inherited the Builder role and is attempting to reconstruct the Bunker. This proves futile, as he is eliminated at exile by the suspicions Anneliese placed on him prior to her departure.
This week becomes another double-exile, and Jack is targeted almost unanimously by the entire cast, regardless of being confirmed by Anneliese. The Loser's Lounge is shocked by this move, and they are convinced that citizens are doomed to lose.
Week 7
It is the final round of the game, and the Spies have done an excellent job of manipulating the citizens. However, Reicheru finally rounds up everyone she believes to be a citizen, and decides to target Tenchi, her first friend in the game, at the next exile.
Although the spies did not target Jordan for Imprisonment, he is Imprisoned due to inactivity. The spies become furious that the events of the game have played against them on several levels.
To put icing on the cake, Sam allows the Loser's Lounge to send a message publicly, though the amount of characters they may use is limited. It states:
"Confirmed: Jordan / Taylor lead vote. Straying = Spy. Vote TOGETHER. We support UNCONFIRMED Bruce. Vote Jess."
Despite the Loser's Lounge advice, and firm belief that the investigation results must be a lie (Jessica and Reicheru are the only original Jakub voters, and Reicheru is confirmed to Anneliese), the citizens rally against Tenchi, while the spies rally against Arthur.
The vote comes down to 5-5 surprisingly, as Reicheru managed to get all citizens together. However, when the vote comes down to Bruce, he allows Claire to sway him into voting for Arthur.
The spies successfully sweep the game in one of the most impressive efforts that Spies has seen.
Thank you Ryan for writing this up, it is absolutely fantastic!
