So how did Spies 4: The Schism come to be?
Last season I really wanted to do Intruders as I think it's a cool idea. So I did it. Now this time I don't really have any amazing ideas I want to try out... except I may try and fit two groups of spies into this one. I wanted to do that in Spies 1 actually, but decided to go with a basic setup instead. I'm going to do it eventually and it might work thematically and strategically with this game... we'll see.
I have lots of ideas for themed settings for Spies. One of them was a Victorian / Religious theme. I think the religious theme is pretty cool. I have some cool possible backgrounds for it. I like how it's different. I like it a lot. I'm not sure how I'm going to work in Victorian with the Great Schism (which did not take place during Victorian times lol, but like 250 years before). I'm not sure how much religion is going to take place, but since I probably won't be coming back to it for awhile it's going to have to be effective.
So that was one idea floating around. Also for about 2 months now I've had the name "Schism" stuck in my head. That name is fucking cool. I love everything about it. Honestly I can't imagine Spies 4 having a different subtitle. So I'm going with it.
Spies 3 had a "collective" theme where everybody came together and formed groups as a whole. A togetherness feel. Spies 4 is opposite - a divisive feel. Dividing people into groups. Separations. I like the duality. Also I loved Survivor 4: Wonderland so much, especially the board colors which were bright red and purple! I'm hoping to recreate the bright purple (which is a Victorian color) for Spies 4. We'll see how it works.
Yep so those are the reasons it came together. At this point it's early stages so I could do anything really but why not just go with it? I don't have a gameplan set in stone now. I have some ideas. Most start with the idea of a Schism. How can I separate people? What would be a Schism? How can I incorporate the idea of a division?
I've got lots of new ideas from doing Spies 3 and Spies 2 even that I haven't used yet. I'm going to try and incorporate good ideas into it. Some will fit, some will be saved for Spies 5 and 6. It's important to see how ideas fit. You could have 3 of the best ideas but if you put them all in the same game it could be shitty. I'm sure I'll think up lots of new ideas and roles too before the game starts. I've signed up for a few mafia games on other sites to get more research from a players perspective, as well as maybe spread the word of Spies. =)
Yep so that's the starting thoughts of Spies 4: The Schism. My main worries at this point are:
1) Finding a time to start the game. School starts late August / mid September. Can I finish by then? That would mean I would have to start early and I need a break goddammit!
2) Can I make a two-color boards on proboards? I'm sick of one color blacks or whites.
3) How can I do divisions without giving away too much information and/or having people vote based solely on divisions? Actually I could have Episode 1 be one big group and divide in Ep. 2.
4) Initializing conditions so that spies/cits have 50/50. How the fuck am I supposed to know the right #'s of spies in 2 groups of spies?? right # of exiles? imprisonments? jesus i'm scared.
K that's all. Hope you enjoyed reading this Mr/Mrs. Reader From the Future who will see this 3-5 months after I hit post message. =)
